The History of Genesis Creation Interpretation: 1,800 Years of Theology Meeting Science

The first person to point out this contradiction was not a nineteenth-century geologist, nor a twenty-first-century scientist. It was Origen, a third-century theologian from Alexandria. He put it this way: “Now who is there, pray, possessed of understanding, that will regard the statement as appropriate, that the first day, and the second, and the third, in which also both evening and morning are mentioned, existed without sun, and moon, and stars — the first day even without a sky?”[1]

Read Genesis 1 straight through and you arrive at a genuinely strange spot. On the first day, God creates light and separates day from night. Yet the sun, moon, and stars that actually produce that light aren’t created until the fourth day. By the third day, grass and trees have already sprouted on the earth — plants that would need sunlight, except the sun doesn’t exist yet. Today this passage is often called the “Fourth Day Problem,” cited as a point of direct collision with the timeline modern astrophysics draws for the universe, in which stars and the sun long predate the earth. But this contradiction is not something modern science discovered. It’s a snag that anyone reading the text seriously would have hit almost as soon as it was written down. And for roughly 1,800 years since then, theologians, philosophers, and scientists have each tried, in their own way, to untangle this knot. This article isn’t about deciding which of these interpretations is correct. It’s about tracing why people in each era chose the interpretation they did, and what objections that interpretation provoked in the generation that followed.

Origen: Truth Lies Beyond the Letter

Origen (c. 184–253) was one of the most prolific scholars of early Christianity. He worked in Alexandria, a city where Greek philosophy mixed with the Jewish tradition of scriptural interpretation. The “Alexandrian school” that developed there treated the goal of interpretation not as reading Scripture literally, but as uncovering the spiritual meaning hidden within it.[2]

For Origen, the order of creation in Genesis was meant to be read as allegory — a symbolic narrative that conveys a deeper meaning through particular objects or events. In his treatise De Principiis, he argued that the very fact that “evening and morning” occurred during the first three days without sun, moon, or stars was itself a signal that these days should not be read as the twenty-four-hour days we know.[1] To him, fixating on the exact dates and sequence of the creation story was to miss the point. What mattered was the theological meaning behind it: the declaration that the world had been built in order, according to God’s will.

This approach also had a philosophical background. To theologians influenced by Greek philosophy at the time, cutting God’s act of creation into units of human time seemed inappropriate in itself. Counting God’s work in days, one after another, amounted to dragging God down to a human scale.[2] Origen’s interpretation influenced a good number of theologians over the following centuries, but it also generated controversy. Taken too far, allegorical reading risked letting what the biblical text actually meant become hostage to the interpreter’s imagination.

Augustine’s Paradox: The Most Cautious Reading Was the Most Radical

Around 415, roughly a century and a half after Origen’s death, Augustine, bishop of Hippo in North Africa, completed a massive commentary titled De Genesi ad Litteram (The Literal Meaning of Genesis). Judging by the title alone, one might expect a book committed to a “literal” reading — but its actual content was close to the opposite.[3]

Augustine did not read the six days of Genesis as six actual days. He held that everything in the world was, in fact, created in a single instant. In his view, the word “day” in the text was not a unit of duration but a literary device pointing to the logical order or stages among the things created. Augustine went a step further and proposed a distinctive theory: that when God created all things, he planted them not only in their finished form but also as “potential causes” still waiting to unfold. Under this concept, which later scholars would name rationes seminales (“seminal reasons”), creation was completed in an instant, but its results would gradually reveal themselves over time.[4]

What’s striking is that Augustine did not arrive at this reading under scientific pressure. In the early fifth century, when he was active, there was no geology and no body of astronomical observation to speak of. What drove him was purely theological and philosophical concern. He had already found internal contradictions like the “Fourth Day Problem” within the text of Genesis itself, and he warned that forcing a rigidly literal reading could actually undermine the credibility of faith. His worry was that insisting, in Scripture’s name, on claims that contradicted well-established facts about the natural world would let faith be equated with ignorance and made a laughingstock.[3] In other words, Augustine’s caution was a strategy for protecting the faith, not an attempt to weaken it.

The Real Meaning of the Fourth Day: Erasing the Gods’ Names from the Sky

Set Genesis 1 alongside other creation stories from the ancient Near East, and the “Fourth Day Problem” begins to look completely different.

In the Babylonian creation epic Enuma Elish, believed to have been compiled around the twelfth century BCE, the god Marduk defeats Tiamat, the goddess who embodies primordial chaos, and fashions heaven and earth out of her body. He then creates the sun, moon, and stars and installs each as a divine being in the sky.[5] To the Mesopotamians, the sun god Shamash and the moon god Sin were gods actually worshipped as such. Across the ancient Near East more broadly, the sun, moon, and stars were regarded as divine beings that governed human fate.[6]

Read against this background, the way Genesis 1 words things looks quite deliberate. When it comes to creating the heavenly luminaries on the fourth day, Genesis avoids the ordinary words for “sun” and “moon” current at the time. Instead, it simply calls them the “greater light” and the “lesser light.” These two Hebrew terms happen to overlap with the divine names used for the sun and moon in surrounding cultures. Many biblical scholars see this as no accident, but a deliberate rhetorical strategy: by calling the heavenly bodies merely “lights” rather than giving them divine names, the text makes clear that they are not gods but tools made by God.[6] The statement that light was created before the sun can be read the same way. It is a declaration that light itself, as a phenomenon, is not dependent on any one celestial body — an oblique rebuttal of the surrounding cultures that deified the sun.[5]

On this reading, the purpose of Genesis 1 was never to tell us exactly which day the heavenly bodies were made on. Its purpose, rather, was to strip the sun, moon, and stars of divine status and demote them to the rank of creatures whose job was simply to mark off time and seasons.[6] Of course, this interpretation doesn’t make the “Fourth Day Problem” disappear — the sequence of events in the text is still there. But it does establish at least one thing clearly: the author of Genesis may never have been trying to answer the question we ask today, namely, “which came first, astronomically speaking?”

The Reformation: A Counterattack on Allegory

The allegorical reading represented by Origen and Augustine retained considerable influence throughout the Middle Ages. But the sixteenth-century Reformation confronted this current head-on.

Martin Luther, in his lectures on Genesis, took direct aim at Augustine, observing that Augustine “trifles with the six days in a strange way, making them days of hidden meaning, according to the knowledge of angels, and does not let them be six natural days.”[7] John Calvin, too, in the commentary on Genesis he published in 1554, harshly criticized Origen’s style of allegorical interpretation, writing that such a reading leaves Scripture’s meaning “indiscriminately interpreted” and “mangled.” Calvin explained that the reason God took the span of six days to make the world was to accommodate “his works to the capacity of men.”[7]

This current connected to sola scriptura, the core principle of the Reformation. The reformers believed that the biblical text should be read according to its own plain linguistic meaning, unfiltered by later philosophy or church tradition.[7] Here’s the interesting part: the return to literal interpretation was not simply a product of naivety. It was a theological choice born from the concern that, when allegorical interpretation is abused, the very authority of Scripture gets eroded by the interpreter’s own arbitrary judgment.

Galileo’s Proposal: How to Go to Heaven and How the Heavens Go

In the early seventeenth century, Galileo Galilei added one more principle to the history of Genesis interpretation. What he was dealing with was not the order of creation but heliocentrism, yet the principle he proposed for reading Scripture could be applied just as well to the debate over creation’s sequence.

In 1615, Galileo laid out his principles of biblical interpretation in a letter to the Grand Duchess Christina of Tuscany. He held that Scripture and nature, since both originate from God, cannot contradict each other. His conclusion followed from this: when evidence from nature, confirmed by the senses, conflicts with a traditional interpretation of Scripture, it is the interpretation that needs to be reexamined — not Scripture itself.[8] In the letter, he summarized his position by quoting Cardinal Baronio: “The intention of the Holy Spirit is to teach us how one goes to heaven, and not how heaven goes.”[8] In other words, the purpose of Scripture was not to serve as an astronomy textbook, but to show the way to salvation.

This principle of Galileo’s belongs to an interpretive tradition known as “accommodation” — the idea that the language of Scripture was simplified to the level of its contemporary readers, and should not be measured against the standard of modern scientific precision. The principle itself was not new; Augustine had voiced a similar concern centuries earlier. Galileo’s contribution was to link this principle explicitly to the latest astronomical observations of his day, leaving behind a model for how science and theology would continue to converse over the centuries that followed.

Geology’s Challenge and Two Attempts at Reconciliation: Gap Theory and Day-Age Theory

As geology established itself as an independent science across the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the interpretation of Genesis once again ran into new pressure. Fossils and rock layered in sediment showed that the earth was far older than a few thousand years. This time, the question theologians had to answer shifted from “when was the sun made?” to “how old is the earth?” — and that question, in turn, became entangled again with how the order of creation was interpreted.

The first response was the “Gap Theory.” In 1814, the Scottish theologian Thomas Chalmers popularized this reading. He proposed that between Genesis 1:1 (“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth”) and 1:2 (“and the earth was without form, and void”), there lay a vast, unspecified span of time that Scripture simply doesn’t mention.[9] Under this theory, the creation described in verse 1 and the six days of creation beginning at verse 3 are two separate events, and the immense spans of time and rock layers that geology describes fit into the gap between them. Gap Theory was widely accepted for a time because it let the “six days” of the text stand as literal days while attributing the earth’s great age to that prior gap.

The second response was “Day-Age Theory.” In 1823, the Anglican clergyman George Stanley Faber presented an early form of this interpretation, which was later refined further by the Scottish geologist Hugh Miller, the Swiss-born geologist Arnold Guyot, and the Canadian geologist John William Dawson, among others.[10] This theory took a different path from Gap Theory. It held that the Genesis word for “day” need not mean twenty-four hours at all, and that each “day” could be read as a geological age spanning millions of years. Supporters of this reading pointed to the fact that the rough order of creation in Genesis — water, land, plants, sea creatures, birds, land animals, humans — bears a striking resemblance to the broad sequence in which life appeared, as revealed by geology.

Both theories had a logic of their own, but neither one fully resolved the “Fourth Day Problem.” Because Gap Theory kept the six days literal, it offered no answer to why the sun and moon appear only after the third day. Day-Age Theory, for its part, didn’t fully square with modern astronomy’s account of the sun and stars actually predating the earth by billions of years. Both theories answered the question of the earth’s age, but they left the logic of the creation order itself as homework for the next generation.

Symmetry as the Key: The Literary Framework Hypothesis

In the mid-twentieth century, biblical scholars began approaching the problem from an entirely different direction: the so-called Framework Hypothesis. It became widely known through a 1958 paper by the American Reformed theologian Meredith Kline, who systematized the interpretation.[11]

The core claim of the Framework Hypothesis runs as follows. The six days of Genesis 1 were never meant to record a chronological sequence; instead, they’re arranged according to a literary structure built on thematic pairs. Under this structure, days one through three are days of forming “realms,” while days four through six are days of filling those realms. The light and darkness separated on day one are filled by the sun, moon, and stars on day four; the sky and sea formed by dividing the waters on day two are filled by birds and fish on day five; and the land and plants prepared on day three are filled by land animals and humans on day six.[11]

Within this framework, the “Fourth Day Problem” simply isn’t a problem to begin with. The light of day one and the sun of day four are not two temporal positions of the same event, but a matched literary pair of “realm” and “filling.” The logic is that a contradiction only arises if you read the text chronologically; read as a thematic, symmetrical structure, the question of sequence never even arises.

Of course, this reading has its critics too. They point out that the repeated phrase “and there was evening, and there was morning” in the Genesis text strongly implies the passage of time, and that treating it as purely a literary device ignores the actual texture of the language the text uses.[11] The Framework Hypothesis offered an elegant answer to the Fourth Day Problem — but that very elegance became a spark for a new round of debate.

Rereading Through Ancient Eyes: Functional Creation Theory

The most recent approach circles back to the original question: what were the author of Genesis and its first readers actually asking? In his 2009 book The Lost World of Genesis One, the American Old Testament scholar John Walton proposed reading Genesis 1 the same way we read other ancient Near Eastern creation texts.[12]

Walton’s central claim is that people in the ancient Near East understood “creation” differently than we do today. For modern people, creation is a question of “material origins” — matter coming into being out of nothing. But ancient Near Eastern creation stories, such as Babylon’s Enuma Elish or the various Egyptian creation myths, were less concerned with when and how matter was made than with what role and function it was assigned as it became part of an ordered world.[12] Walton argues that Genesis 1, too, was written with this “function-centered” concept of creation.

From this vantage point, Genesis 1 reads less like a record of physical origins and more like a temple-inauguration text — a declaration of the cosmos as a vast temple in which God dwells. Days one through three, on this reading, establish three functions: time, weather, and food; days four through six appoint the officeholders who will carry out those functions. Walton explains that the statement that the sun, moon, and stars were “made” on the fourth day need not mean that these bodies as physical matter first came into existence that day — it can instead mean that only then were they assigned the “function of governing time.”[12] If this reading is correct, then Genesis 1 was never a text about the physical timing of celestial bodies’ formation in the first place, which means it was never really comparable, on the same level, to the timeline of modern astronomy.

Walton’s interpretation is being widely discussed both inside and outside theological circles, but it’s far from a settled matter. Some scholars criticize Walton for flattening real differences among the various ancient Near Eastern texts, while others rate this approach as the most persuasive way to rescue Genesis from its apparent collision with modern science.[13] Like the Framework Hypothesis before it, Functional Creation Theory is one compelling answer to the Fourth Day Problem — not the final chapter of the debate.

Conclusion: A Question That Has Outlasted Its Answers

Across the roughly 1,800 years from Origen to John Walton, interpretation of the creation order in Genesis has never once converged on a single answer. Some read the text as allegory; others, reacting against allegory, read it literally. Some pushed geological time into a gap outside the biblical text; others pulled that time inside the word “day” itself. Still others rearranged the sequence itself as a literary device, and most recently, some have proposed that asking about the order of function, rather than the order of matter, was the right question all along.

For readers in the United States, this is not just distant history. American public debate over Genesis and science has repeatedly circled back to a version of the same question, from the 1925 Scopes Trial in Dayton, Tennessee, to the 2005 federal court ruling in Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District, which found that intelligent design could not be taught as science in public school biology classes.[14] Organizations such as BioLogos, founded by geneticist Francis Collins to reconcile evolutionary science with Christian faith, now engage directly with readings like Walton’s functional-creation theory as they try to offer American evangelicals a path through the controversy that doesn’t require choosing between their faith and the scientific evidence.[5] Seen against that backdrop, the fourth day of Genesis was never really a dispute about geology or astrophysics alone — it has long doubled as a proxy for a much larger argument over who gets to decide what a sacred text is for.

Lay these interpretations side by side and one interesting fact emerges: each era’s reading faithfully mirrored the problem that era was wrestling with most urgently. For Origen and Augustine, the tension was between Greek philosophy and the language of Scripture. For the Reformation, it was the tension between the authority of church tradition and the authority of Scripture itself. In the nineteenth century, it was geological time; in the twentieth, the literary structure of the text; in the twenty-first, the unfamiliar cultural context of the ancient Near East — each surfacing as the most pressing question of its own age. The same text, Genesis 1, has been read with a different face in every era not because the text changed, but because the people asking questions of it were, each time, living in a different world. In that sense, the real history of the Fourth Day Problem is not a record of which interpretation won, but something closer to a record of just how persistently human beings have kept repeating the question they ask when they look up at the sky.
